The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Electrician’s Mate Second Class Marvin J. Walker, United States Navy, for heroism at the risk of life not involving conflict with an armed enemy in proceeding through an extremely dangerous area aboard the U.S.S. LEXINGTON (CV-2) during the Battle of the Coral Sea, 7 – 8 May 1942, to investigate the extent of damage caused by an explosion which had disrupted communications between the bridge and the central station. He then made his way to the bridge and gave the captain the first report of conditions below decks, furnishing information of vital importance in the control of damage during a most crucial period of the battle.
