The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Ensign Herbert Welby George, United States Navy, for
heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in contact with the enemy while serving with Patrol Wing FOUR in the Territory of Alaska during the Aleutian Islands Campaign, 1 – 15 June 1942. In addition to flying numerous night patrols under extremely hazardous weather conditions, he, with utter disregard for his own personal safety, participated in bombing attacks launched on Japanese vessels in Kiska Harbor. Flying through low-hanging clouds, the pilot dropped his bombs and strafed the targets from a very low altitude under withering fire from Japanese anti-aircraft batteries. Successfully avoiding the cloud-shrouded mountains surrounding the harbor, he brought his battered plane safely to base. His courageous persistence and conscientious devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
