The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Boatswain’s Mate Second Class George Patrick McIntosh, United States Navy, for diving into the sea to assist survivors of the U.S.S. WASP (CV-7) who were too weak to hold to the lines and life preservers tossed to them after that vessel’s torpedoing by Japanese forces on 15 September 1942. Boatswain’s Mate Second Class McIntosh, a member of the crew of a United States warship, continued to swim among the survivors, even though he had no life preserver, cheering and encouraging the other men in the water.
