The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Motor Machinist’s Mate Roy Louis St. George, United States Navy, for contributing vitally to the successful repair of engineering spaces after the torpedoing of the U.S.S. O’BRIEN (DD-415) on 15 September 1942, thus making it possible for the vessel to clear the danger area without further mishap. His action enabled the ship to attempt a return to its base and kept the vessel afloat until she had almost reached port. By remaining at his station long after she had begun to sink, there was no loss of life when she eventually went down.
