The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Coxswain Edward George Walker, United States Navy, for gallantry in action as gunner aboard a United States warship that was attacked by Japanese planes off Guadalcanal, in 1942. Coxswain Walker scored a hit with his first shot. He held persistently to his target until the Japanese plane crashed without releasing its bombs. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
