Headquarters, FIFTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 187 (December 19, 1944)
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Lieutenant Colonel (Cavalry) Charles A. Ellis, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the 91st Cavalry Reconnaissance Squadron, in action against enemy forces on 2 and 3 July 1944, in Italy. Colonel Ellis, while in personal charge of a reconnaissance group, cleared a roadway, under fire, of mines and demolition bombs. He killed two Germans, captured several others and after forming his men into a combat patrol, led them into the town of Montecatini where he wounded a German officer and captured nine of the enemy’s men. He then led a counterattack and held off the enemy until reinforcements arrived. Lieutenant Colonel Ellis’ extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
