The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Emerson H. Dimpfel, United States Navy, for gallantry in action during World War II. Lieutenant Dimpfel obtained and continued to keep perfect depth control during all conditions of operations on two war patrols in Japanese-controlled water, while serving as Diving Officer of a United States Submarine. Through eight attacks he regulated the depth control with such success that the submarine was able to sink six enemy vessels aggregating 48,353 tons and to severely damage two other enemy ships. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service.
