(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Specialist First Class Richard C. Roarke, United States Coast Guard, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroic conduct on the occasion of a fire at Pier #8, Newport News, Virginia in December 1944. Observing two men in a life boat which had been drawn under the fiercely burning pier by the violent winds and strong tide, he voluntarily plunged into the icy waters to attempt a rescue, continuing the valiant and determined efforts until forced back by the intense heat. He displayed splendid initiative, resolute fortitude and a gallant spirit of self-sacrifice on behalf of these in peril.
