(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Seaman First Class Harry E. Herrmann, United States Coast Guard, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroic and gallant conduct while serving on board the U.S.S. LST 261 in effecting the rescue of two shipmates from drowning in the waters of the outer harbor of Southampton, England in June 1944. He voluntarily jumped over board to rescue two shipmates struggling with the strong current. After returning one man safely to the ship, he swam to aid the other seaman 700 yards away and carried him to a nearer vessel where he effectively applied first aid.
