(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Harold M. De Jarnette, United States Coast Guard, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism in rescuing a man from the waters of Manila Bay, Philippine Island on 12 May 1945. When a member of the crew of a small boat from the U.S. Army LST 652 fell over board the coxswain of the boat attempted the rescue of his shipmate, but soon was in grave danger of drowning himself. Despite the heavy sea and unfavorable weather, Boatswain’s Mate Second Class De Jarnette swam to the assistance of this man and by his courageous efforts succeeded in returning him to safety.
