(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Radioman Second Class Stanley G. Putske, United States Coast Guard, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism on 3 May 1944 while serving aboard the U.S.S. MENGES off the Algerian coast. When the MENGES was torpedoed in action with an enemy submarine, Radioman Second Class Putske was wounded at the battle station. Since all deck petty officers were filled by the explosion, he assisted in lowering the ship’s boat into the water and voluntarily took the boat away to save two men who had been blown off the ship. His action saved the lives of the men.
