(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Seaman Second Class Fred William Williams, Jr., United States Coast Guard, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroic conduct while serving aboard a U.S.C.G.C. during rescue of survivors from the U.S.S. ST. AUGUSTINE after the accidentally sinking of that vessel in the Atlantic Ocean on the night of 6 January 1943. Observing several survivors struggling to keep themselves afloat in the heavy seas, Seaman Second Class Williams repeatedly jumped over board into the icy waters to affect their rescue and bring them safe aboard his ship. his courageous initiated and utter disregard for his own personal safety undoubtedly saved the lives of many men who otherwise might have perished.
