(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Chief Boatswain’s Mate Thomas W. Ward, United States Coast Guard, was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for heroism and meritorious conduct in attempting to save his ship which burned and explode and for saving a wounded Marine from further injury and death during a fire in Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Territory of Hawaii, on 21 May 1944. Under condition of great personal danger from falling debris, fire and concussion he courageously directed his men and when there was no hope of saving the ship he voluntarily inspected below to see that all wounded men were out and then evacuated a badly wounded Marine, thus explosion him self and suffering a serious wound because of his action.
