The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Aviation Ordnanceman Third Class Luther Lee Burton (NSN: 2585953), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights as turret gunner in a carrier-based Torpedo Bomber in operations against the enemy fleet in Kure Harbor, Japan, against military targets in the Nansei Shoto, and in a bombing attack which resulted in the destruction of an entire enemy convoy in the East China Sea during the period 19 March 1945 to 24 March 1945. In spite of enemy anti-aircraft fire, he performed his duties skillfully during these attacks and materially assisted his pilot in scoring direct bomb hits on an enemy cruiser. His courage and skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
