The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Lieutenant Commander John S. Burrows, Jr., United States Naval Reserve, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as commanding Officer of the U.S.S. EDMONDS while operating with an escort carrier task group from 18 October to 29 October 1944. During this period, while the task group was supporting the landings and occupation of strong enemy held island bases, his vessel screened and protected the escort carrier group from numerous enemy submarine and air attacks. His courageous, inspiring leadership and professional skill were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Lieutenant Commander Burrows is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
