(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Charles Abner Earnest, III, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of Company K, 3d Battalion, 22d Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Fort de Fouceville, France, on 8 June 1944. Captain Earnest moved to a position within range of enemy machine guns and deliberately exposed himself and a volunteer patrol of four, in order to draw fire from a platoon which was thus enabled to return to safety. Captain Earnest’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 4th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
