The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Gunner’s Mate Second Class Henry E. Burris (NSN: 6342642), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving on board the U.S.S. LCT 452 during the amphibious invasion of Southern France on 15 August 1944. Gunner’s Mate Second Class Burris displayed extreme skill and courage in carrying out his assigned duties as a crew member of the U.S.S. LCT 452 during its approach to the designated beach against strong enemy opposition to discharge vital assault cargo. The final beaching was effected after six unsuccessful attempts were made to force through inshore obstacles, and concentrated enemy shell fire from defense positions. When his craft suffered damage from shore batteries, which also started fires in an ammunition stowage, he fearlessly entered the flaming locker, effectively fought the fires and disposed of four cases of machine gun ammunition, thereby promptly eliminating a source of serious damage to his craft and of probable casualties to members of its crew. The exceptional courage, prompt and decisive action, and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Gunner’s Mate Second Class Burris were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
