The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Gunner Robert P. Burr (NSN: 315865), United States Naval Reserve, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States in connection with the defeat, boarding and capture of German Submarine U-505 on 4 June 1944 off Cape Blanco in French West Africa. Gunner Burr was a member of the boarding party from the U.S.S. GUADALCANAL (CVE-60) which boarded the submarine immediately after her capture and assisted in preventing her form sinking so that she was eventually towed back to Burma. He rendered the demolition and scuttling charges harmless despite the fact that any mistake on his part while doing so would have meant instant death to himself and probably to most of the others in the boarding parties. Gunner Burr’s conduct reflects great credit on the Naval Service and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Navy. (Gunner Burr is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
