(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William Connell Dyer, Jr., United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 2d Battalion, 415th Infantry Regiment, 104th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at the Roer River, in the vicinity of Duren, Germany, on 23 February 1945. On that date Lieutenant Dyer’s company was assigned to cross the Roer river. On reaching the opposite side, Lieutenant Dyer and his men were pinned down by fire from a machine gun in a house situated in a large factory in which the enemy was firmly entrenched. Lieutenant Dyer charged the house and killed the gunner. In the action that followed he and his men accounted for six enemy machine guns destroyed and 23 of the enemy killed. First Lieutenant Dyer’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 104th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
