The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Chief Storekeeper John Francis Burkhart (NSN: 2502993), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy off Formosa while serving aboard the U.S.S. HOUSTON (CL-81) on 16 October 1944. Following three night torpedo attacks during 12, 13, and 14 October 1944, the ship was damaged by an enemy torpedo. On 16 October the ship was again torpedoed by enemy aircraft starting a gasoline fire which endangered the after part of the ship. He conducted himself in a conspicuously heroic manner by manning a hose and in complete disregard for his own safety, repeatedly exposed himself to danger and aided materially in extinguishing the fire. His courage, skill and determination were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
