The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross (Posthumously) to Ensign Warren Cranna Burgess (NSN: 0-315602), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight during the operations of the United States Naval Forces in and around the Mariana Islands. As the pilot of a carrier-based Torpedo Plane on a routine anti-submarine patrol on 23 June 1944, he engaged an enemy medium bomber which was flying close to the formation of United States ships and was successful in destroying the enemy plane. In his encounter with the enemy he courageously pressed home repeated attacks in the face of returning fire, and displayed a high degree of skill and ingenuity in maneuvering his own aircraft. His courageous and aggressive spirit was at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
