The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Gunner’s Mate Second Class William L. Burden (NSN: 2246068), United States Navy, for heroism, gallantry and outstanding endurance when the U.S.S. CHESTER struck a mine off the northern coast of Borneo on 27 July 1945. He was knocked down by the concussion of the explosion, and severely burned. In spite of intense pain, and in disregard of his own safety, he rescued two helpless men from an area which was aflame. His leadership and courage were outstanding and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
