The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Lieutenant, Junior Grade William Eugene Burckhalter (NSN: 0-125984), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action as a Fighter Pilot in Fighting Squadron SIXTEEN (VF-16) during operations against Japanese-held bases at Hollandia, New Guinea, on 21 April 1944. After successfully engaging in an offensive strike against enemy airfields, he sighted a formation of three enemy twin-engine bombers, and after calling unsuccessfully for assistance proceeded to attack single-handed, the three planes. He successively attacked these planes, and by his courageous and aggressive actions and unusual skill, succeeded in the certain destruction of all three bombers, alone and unaided. By his actions, he indicated a complete disregard for his own personal safety which was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
