After World War II, as a Lieutenant Colonel, Leland Dunham was taken Prisoner of War during the evacuation of Taejon, South Korea on July 20, 1950, forced to march to North Korea on the “Tiger Death March,” and as a prisoner died of Beri Beri at An-Dong, North Korea on August 7, 1951. His remains were not recovered.

Dunham (ASN: 0-31469), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer of Company K, 3d Battalion, 101st Infantry Regiment, 26th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Lulzhausen and Kaundorf, Luxembourg, on 26 December 1944. Captain Dunham’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 26th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
