Woodell, United States Coast Guard, was awarded the Coast Guard Medal for heroism on the afternoon of 13 August 1976 while engaged in the perilous rescue of two people from drowning in the Atlantic Ocean at Hatteras Inlet, North Carolina when a man and a woman were swept beyond the breakers and into a strong rip-tide.
