Headquarters, FIFTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 138 (August 17, 1944)

(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Technical Sergeant Roy Harold Dullum (ASN: 0-1695684), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 361st Infantry Regiment, 91st Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 16 June 1944. During an assault on Istia, Italy, Technical Sergeant Dullum’s platoon leader was wounded and evacuated. Sergeant Dullum displayed great personal courage, excellent judgment and exemplary leadership when, in the absence of his platoon leader, he consolidated his disorganized unit and led it through an open field, under heavy enemy fire from three machinegun nests and intense mortar concentrations, to a vital objective on the edge of the village. Finding the Germans determined to make a house-to-house defense, Technical Sergeant Dullum led his men to the nearest house and cleared it of the enemy. He then crawled forward alone through the streets until he could gain observation of two remaining machinegun emplacements that were holding up their advance. When in position, Sergeant Dullum personally knocked out the two enemy machinegun nests, killed fifteen enemy, wounded two others and captured thirteen German machinegunners and riflemen. His action helped in the capture of the town and secured the right flank of his battalion against possible counterattack. Technical Sergeant Dullum’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 91st Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

  • Bronze Star Medal

    Service:

    United States Army

    Rank:

    First Lieutenant (Infantry)

    Action Date:

    April 29, 1945

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Roy H. Dullum (ASN: 0-1695684), United States Army, for heroic achievement in action on 29 April 1945, near Estrana, Italy. When a convoy was attacked by a group of approximately thirty enemy infantrymen, Lieutenant Dullum quickly organized four drivers into a road block to defend his vehicles. Completely disregarding his own safety, Lieutenant Dullum moved forward in the darkness, ignoring the intense volume of rifle and machine pistol fire being directed at him. Rapidly firing his carbine he moved swiftly from one position to another, creating the impression of a much larger defending force. This action was so effective that, after a fire fight of about twenty minutes, the enemy withdrew in confusion, leaving two wounded behind. By his quick thinking and courageous action Lieutenant Dullum saved a great part of his battalion’s transport from destruction or loss, and his action reflects great credit on himself and on the Armed Forces of the United States.
