The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant Nicholas B. Dulle (ASN: 35016021/0-2007704), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company G, 2d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in risking his life three times to rescue wounded men from the path of intense enemy fire in fighting on New Georgia, Solomon Islands, on 29, 30 and 31 July 1943. Seeing a wounded corporal lying exposed to the enemy’s spray of bullets on 29 July 1943, he ran forward and carried the man to cover. On the following day an officer fell seventy-five yards from the enemy while leading an attack on a well-emplaced hostile position. Sergeant Dulle again ran into the thick of fire and carried the injured officer from the lines. On 31 July, Sergeant Dulle moved forward through a torrent of Japanese 90-mm. shells and was knocked down three times by the savage concussions while carrying a wounded enlisted man to safety. His repeated disregard for his own welfare in the interest of others noticeably enhanced the morale of the troops with which he served. Sergeant Dulle’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 37th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.

Action Date:
The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Nicholas B. Dulle (ASN: 35016021/0-2007704), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company I, 3d Battalion, 148th Infantry Regiment, 37th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy at Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 21 April 1945. Second Lieutenant Dulle was leading his platoon in an attack against a hill near Irisan when it drew fire from a well-emplaced enemy 37-mm. gun. He immediately organized a skirmish line and led the unit in the perilous advance, constantly inspiring and rallying his men. Securing a Browning Automatic Rifle, he laid down an effective volume of fire, and personally killed the two Japanese manning the gun. After mopping up around the hostile gun position, Second Lieutenant Dulle again started an advance up the hill when a hostile machine gun opened fire. The first bursts wounded an American soldier and Second Lieutenant Dulle immediately moved to the aid of the casualty. Just as he started to pick up the injured man, he was fatally wounded. Second Lieutenant Dulle sacrificed his life in a heroic attempt to save a wounded comrade. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Dulle, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
