The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Harold P. DuBose (ASN: 0-1323411), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company K, 3d Battalion, 306th Infantry Regiment, 77th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Suri, Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on 5 May 1945. At about 0400 Hours, approximately 80 well armed Japanese soldiers, attacked the right flank of a defensive position occupied by Company K. The attack was repulsed with light losses to the enemy by the second platoon. Again at daybreak, the enemy resumed the attack with great determination, employing intense mortar, machine gun and rifle fire. At 0600 Hours, a section of medium tanks arrived to reinforce the right flank of the company. Despite heavy enemy fire, Lieutenant DuBose left the cover of his foxhole and ran back 150 yards across open terrain to lead one of the tanks up to his position. Riding on the tank turret, in order to obtain better observation of the enemy, he took the tank 50 yards forward of the lines to within point blank range of the enemy. Although exposed to intense enemy fire, he remained on the turret, directing the fire of the tank in blasting the enemy out of well concealed positions. Lieutenant DuBose, firing four bandoleers of ammunition from his M-1 rifle, personally killed 18 of the enemy. Sixty-four Japanese soldiers were killed, including those destroyed by Lieutenant DuBose, his platoon and the tank fire he directed. Ten knee mortars, twelve machine guns and a great number of rifles were captured by the platoon. The conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity of Lieutenant DuBose proved a constant inspiration to the men of the company. His extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 77th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
