Headquarters, U.S. Army Forces in the South Pacific Area, General Orders No. 47 (February 22, 1943)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Captain (Infantry) Cyrus John Drew, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving as Commanding Officer the Battalion Headquarters of the 2d Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, from 9 to 24 January 1943. During this period Captain Drew led several patrols into enemy territory covered by numerous closely organized enemy machine gun and sniper positions. Each patrol mission subjected him to great personal hazard, which he disregarded in string to complete his task of destroying enemy emplacements. On one occasion, after advancing under withering enemy machine gun fire, he single-handedly disposed of one pillbox from which he had been fired upon. He captured and returned to Headquarters important documents which disclosed enemy dispositions and which information led to their ultimate destruction. The information gained on his patrols was used by him to direct and personally lead an M-3 tank through the jungle against a ring of 40 well-concealed enemy pillboxes on 23 and 24 January, reduction of some 12 of which was accomplished by point-blank 37-mm. fire, thereby greatly facilitating the ensuing annihilation of all resistance from this enemy strong point. Captain Drew’s outstanding leadership, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
