(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) James Burke Dozier, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with an Infantry Company of the 290th Infantry Regiment, 75th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Belgium on 19 January 1945. Although wounded the previous day, Second Lieutenant Dozier refused evacuation in order to lead the remnant of his platoon in the assault against well-prepared enemy positions. He was again painfully wounded, loosing an eye. Despite his wounds he led his men until the position was taken. After placing his men strategically in strong defensive positions, Lieutenant Dozier, refusing a litter so that another wounded man could be carried to the rear, and after he had assured himself that captured positions were well defended, made his way to an aid station. Second Lieutenant Dozier’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 75th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
