The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Chief Radioman Edward J. Buckie (NSN: 4068938), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against major units of the Japanese Fleet off Kyushu on 7 April 1945. As Turret Gunner of a carrier-based torpedo plane, he participated in a daring attack on one Japanese battleship and four screening destroyers, during which his pilot scored a torpedo hit on the battleship. While retiring, his plane was caught in a cross-fire of intense anti-aircraft fire and manning his gun in a cool and courageous manner, he raked the decks of the warships with accurate fire. While his .50 caliber bullets could not do major damage, they served as a diversion and contributed materially to the safe retirement of his plane. His marksmanship and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
