The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Chief Boatswain’s Mate William H. Buchanan (NSN: 5100154), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and meritorious performance of duty when the U.S.S. KIOWA took the S.S. LONE JACK in tow from 2 March until 11 March 1945. In charge of passing the two to the abandoned S.S. LONE JACK, Chief Buchanan’s display of expert seamanship and constant attendance of tow wire contributed to the success of the ship being towed into port. He was seriously injured when attempting to cast off tow but insisted on remaining to see the job completed, although unable to remain on his feet. His skill and determination reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
