The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Roger Irving Bruce (NSN: 0-106955), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flights in operations against the enemy in the Tokyo Area, Iwo Jima, Okinawa Jima and Kyushu. As pilot of a carrier based fighter during the period 16 February 1945 to 8 June 1945, he participated in twenty strikes against enemy shipping, airfields, and installations, inflicting extensive damage. His skill and courage were at all times inspiring and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant Roger Irving Bruce (NSN: 0-106955), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while leading a flight of four carrier-based night-fighter aircraft over eastern Kyushu and the Kure Harbor area the night of 29 March 1945. During darkness in the face of searchlight illumination and anti-aircraft fire, he made a detailed search of the Japanese Inland Sea and Harbor area until after dawn to make a more accurate appraisal. The excellence and clarity of his reports were exemplary. His leadership, skill and courage were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
