    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Harry Thomas Brownscombe (NSN: 0-176522), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as a Pilot in Air Group EIGHT, embarked in U.S.S. BUNKER HILL (CV-17). While on a fighter sweep over Guam on 19 June 1944, though out-numbered two to one by enemy fighter-type aircraft and though heavy cloud conditions forced all engagements to be made a dangerously low altitudes, he, with skillful airmanship, shot down two enemy Zeke-type fighter airplanes in flames, although his own airplane was badly damaged by two enemy fighter airplanes which had previously attacked his division. His exceptional skill and courageous conduct on this flight were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting a Gold Star in lieu of a Second Award of the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Harry Thomas Brownscombe (NSN: 0-176522), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in the Pacific area from 15 June to 18 July 1944. Lieutenant Brownscombe completed twenty flights in a combat area where enemy anti-aircraft fire was expected to be effective or where enemy aircraft patrols usually occurred. His conduct throughout has distinguished him among those performing duties of the same character.
