The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant Robert E. Brownell (NSN: 0-98596), United States Naval Reserve, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight in operations against a Japanese battleship task force in waters surrounding the Philippine Islands on 24 October 1944. As pilot of a carrier-based fighter plane, despite continuous, intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire, he strafed and damaged an enemy battleship and light cruiser, thereby materially contributing to the defeat and routing of the enemy fleet. His skill and courage were at all times inspiring and in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
