    Rank:

    Captain (MC)

    Division:

    1st Marine Division

    Action Date:

    August 7 – December 9, 1942

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Legion of Merit with Combat “V” to Captain (MC) Warwick T. Brown (NSN: 0-13023), United States Navy, for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding services to the Government of the United States as the Division Surgeon of the FIRST Marine Division during operations against the enemy on Guadalcanal, British Solomon Islands, from 7 August to 9 December 1942. Captain Brown displayed consummate professional ability in the preparation of medical plans and policies for the Guadalcanal campaign. His highly skillful direction of hospitalization and evacuation was not only instrumental in the saving of many lives, but has since served as a model for medical functions in subsequent campaigns. Although continually handicapped by lack of equipment and insufficient supplies, and although the medical installations were under almost constant bombardment, he maintained an extremely high standard of efficiency and excellence of service. By his keen foresight and aggressive action in attacking hitherto un-encountered natural conditions and tropical diseases, he maintained the physical efficiency of the division at a level vastly superior to that of the enemy, thus contributing materially to the final victory. His unfailing devotion to duty and his exceptional professional skill in the face of the most adverse conditions were a constant source of inspiration to those who served with him and his actions were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. (Captain Brown is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
