    The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal (Posthumously) to Seaman First Class Walter W. Brown (NSN: 3208899), United States Navy, for heroic and courageous conduct after the stranding of the U.S.S. TRUXTON on 18 February 1942 near Newfoundland. Seaman First Class Brown exposed himself continuously to the heavy seas, icy water and freezing temperature in order to maintain communications between the U.S.S. TRUXTON and the shore. His actions enabled the Commanding Officer to control rescue operations and contributed greatly to the saving of the lives of many of his shipmates. The unselfish courage, loyalty and devotion to duty displayed by Seaman First Class Brown on this occasion was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He lost his life as a result of his efforts to save his shipmates.
