The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Aviation Radioman Second Class Walter A. Brown, Jr. (NSN: 2799897), United States Navy, for heroism while participating in aerial flight during the Second Battle of the Philippine Sea, 25 October 1944. As radioman of a carrier-based dive bomber, he participated in an attack, which contributed materially to the annihilation of an enemy Carrier Task Force. His strafing and constantly calling of the intense anti-aircraft fire bursts enabled his pilot to finish his run and make a direct hit on a large enemy carrier. His calmness, skill and courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
