The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Seaman First Class Raymond Dewey Brown (NSN: 8525542), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action on 28 April 1945, as a member of the crew of a close-in fire support ship, during the assault on Okinawa Shima. Through outstanding leadership and determination, displayed in the face of extremely hazardous conditions, he organized a fire fighting party, boarded a blazing casualty evacuation ship and assisted in the extinguishing of the raging fires which threatened the vessel. His utter disregard for personal safety and profound devotion to duty was an inspiration to all. His courage and conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
