Headquarters, SEVENTH U.S. Army, General Orders No. 16 (January 23, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Carl H. Dorschel (ASN: 0-1046417), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 141st Infantry Regiment, 36th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces in Italy, on 1 June 1944. First Lieutenant Dorschel, accompanied by one other officer, was assigned the task of reconnoitering a house, off the main line of advance, to determine the presence or absence of enemy forces. A short distance from the house, enemy machine gunners opened fire. First Lieutenant Dorschel, with complete disregard for his own safety, charged into the concentrated enemy machine gun fire and, by the audacity of his action, took more than 80 bewildered German prisoners. First Lieutenant Dorschel’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
