The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Boatswain’s Mate First Class LeRoy Brown (NSN: 2957494), United States Navy, for heroism in rescuing three officers and fifteen enlisted men, survivors from the torpedoed oiler U.S.S. SISSISSINEWA on 20 November 1944, at Ulithi Atoll. As a member of the crew of the motor launch of the U.S.S. MSACOMA he displayed outstanding courage in effecting the rescue, in seaman-like manner, of the survivors under hazardous conditions by repeated trips through burning waters near the burning and exploding ship. His heroic conduct, performed in the face of great danger to himself, was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
