The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Galen Craig Brown (NSN: 0-118951), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity against the enemy in the assault on Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, 20 to 24 November 1943. He, while under enemy gunfire, directed and took conspicuous part in the rescue of survivors of a nearby boat sunk by enemy gunfire, transferred wounded men to ships landing craft and had them treated, made many trips to and from the beach under enemy gunfire, and was a boat traffic control officer in the danger zone throughout the major period of the operation. His outstanding performance of duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
