(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Leslie Ward Dooley, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with the Anti-Tank Company, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Kasba-Mahdia, French Morocco, on 8 November 1942. Second Lieutenant Dooley voluntarily took the gunner’s position on an anti-tank platoon after members of the crew had either been killed or wounded, remaining in his position until his hand was shot off. His action prevented hostile tanks from overrunning an infantry platoon. Second Lieutenant Dooley’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
