The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Harold H. Brock (NSN: 0-130639), United States Naval Reserve, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight against the enemy as a pilot of a dive bomber attached to a composite squadron operating in the Solomon Islands and Bismarck Archipelago areas from 13 September 1943 to 25 January 1944. During this period, Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Brock took part in nineteen damaging strikes against Japanese airfields and shore installations. On 23 October, despite intense anti-aircraft fire, he scored a direct hit on the control tower at Kahili airfield on Bougainville, and on the following day scored another hit in the revetment area which resulted in the destruction of four enemy bombers. On 23 January, although subjected to repeated attacks by enemy fighters, he destroyed nine bombers parked on the Lakunai airfield, Rabaul, New Britain. His superior airmanship and courageous devotion to duty contributed materially to the success of our forces in neutralizing Japanese air power in this area. His conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
