The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Seaman First Class Eugene D. Broadhead, United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a member of a fire and rescue party, on 1 April 1945, during the amphibious assault against Okinawa Gunto. When a nearby friendly tank landing ship was struck by an enemy suicide plane, and abandoned in blazing and sinking condition, he, with outstanding bravery and initiative boarded the stricken vessel in an effort to extinguish the fires and save the ship. Despite the intense heat and exploding and burning ammunition, he directed streams of water onto the flames, thereby facilitating the extinguishing of the fires and the saving of the ship. Through his disregard for personal safety, gallant leadership and deep devotion to duty in the face of extreme hazards, he proved to be an inspiration to all. His courage and conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
