The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Lieutenant, Junior Grade Jack Moran Bristow (NSN: 0-160566), United States Naval Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity against the enemy as Commanding Officer of the LCT (5) 88, during severe enemy air attack at Arawe, New Britain, on 16 and 17 December 1943. Lieutenant, Junior Grade, Bristow displayed outstanding coolness and determination in combating enemy aircraft. He maneuvered his craft with skill and daring and cooperated with others in putting up heavy volumes of anti-aircraft fire against close range assaults. He took charge of the Tank Landing Craft in this echelon after the Commander LCT (5) Group 19 had become incapacitated and directed their departure and return to base with outstanding courage and leadership. His resourcefulness and gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
