The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Motor Machinist’s Mate First Class Robert Lee Yeager, United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in the line of his profession upon the occasion of a surfacing accident to the U.S.S. CREVALLE (SS_291), 11 September 1944. While in an off-watch status in the crew’s space and upon observing that the ship had taken an inordinately large down angle and that the control room was flooding he manned the telephone and ascertained that the motors were still going ahead at standard speed and that no communications could be established with the control room or conning tower. He then ordered the motors back full. His conduct on this occasion demonstrated quick and clear thinking in an emergency and his action was a major contributing factor to the saving of the ship. His conduct was an inspiration to the officers and men in his ship and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
