The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Boatswain’s Mate Second Class James Cecil Bridges (NSN: 2956600), United States Navy, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while attached to the U.S.S. BARNETT (APA-5), during the amphibious assault at Salerno, Italy, 9 to 10 September 1943. Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Bridges was coxswain of a landing boat which successfully landed troops on the designated beach under heavy enemy fire. Immediately returning with a second load he found a large number of boats and amphibious trucks held up off the beach by an intense barrage of enemy artillery fire. Realizing the consequences of delay and with complete disregard for his own safety he skillfully directed his boat through the artillery barrage. Inspired by his initiative and fearless conduct many of the waiting boats did likewise, thereby re-establishing a flow of traffic, in spite of enemy action, which contributed materially to the success of the assault. The exceptional courage, prompt and decisive action, and outstanding devotion to duty displayed by Boatswain’s Mate Second Class Bridges were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
