The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Lieutenant William Amadee Brewer (NSN: 0-101471), United States Navy, for heroism and extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight on 12 October 1944. As pilot of a carrier-based torpedo plane in Bombing Squadron SEVEN (VB-7), embarked in U.S.S. HANCOCK (CV-19), he led a five plane flight in a glide bombing attack, without fighter escort, against enemy shipping and harbor installations, in the Formosa area. He successfully coordinated his attack with that of an unescorted bomber squadron which was at the target upon his arrival. In spite of adverse weather conditions and intense anti-aircraft fire, he led his flight on to the attack scoring four hits and one probable hit on strategically important targets causing devastating destruction, one of these hits being from his own bomb. His distinguished exhibition of unflagging courage and leadership were at all times in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
