The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William Wybrant Dodge (ASN: 0-1313870), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company E, 2nd Battalion, 2nd Battalion, 320th Infantry Regiment, 35th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces at Luxembourg, on 2, 3, and 5 January 1945. First Lieutenant Dodge, on 2 January 1945, organized and led a daring assault against strongly fortified enemy positions, enabling the attacking echelons to advance and achieve their objective. The following day a neighboring platoon faltered when its leader became a casualty. First Lieutenant Dodge, with complete disregard for his personal safety, crawled across open terrain through heavy enemy fire, reorganized it and then personally led both platoons to their objective. On 5 January 1945, the enemy counterattacked but under the inspiring leadership of First Lieutenant Dodge, his men inflicted heavy casualties and succeeded in forcing the enemy to retreat. First Lieutenant Dodge’s extraordinary heroism, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 35th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
